Earn, learn, and thrive: EMR launches 2025 Fleet Engineer apprenticeship opportunities
- EMR launches recruitment drive for Fleet Engineer Apprentices across Nottingham and Derby
- Positions offer practical experience working at maintenance depots in either Derby or Nottingham
East Midlands Railway (EMR) has announced an exciting recruitment campaign to attract new Fleet Engineering Apprentices, with roles available at its depots in Nottingham and Derby.
As part of its commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion, EMR is encouraging candidates from all backgrounds to apply, particularly women, young people, and individuals from ethnic minority groups.
The four-year apprenticeship programme combines classroom learning with hands-on experience, offering a comprehensive introduction to fleet maintenance.
Apprentices will join a team of over 250 skilled maintenance staff responsible for keeping a fleet of more than 100 trains safe, reliable, and ready for service across the East Midlands and routes to London.
Interested candidates are invited to submit an online application and CV by Sunday, 26 January. Shortlisted applicants will be invited for a guided tour of the depot, offering insights into fleet maintenance operations.
Jai Dhindsa, currently a Fleet Engineer Apprentice, said the opportunity has allowed him to grow both personally and professionally.
He said: "Some of the learning experiences stem from the fact that, during the apprenticeship, there are diverse opportunities and new things to be learnt every day.
"Whilst challenging yourself, you are maintaining and improving the reliability of trains to ensure customer satisfaction and safety, which is rewarding. The practical experience and theoretical knowledge I have gained is invaluable, and they will stay with you for life."
Samuel Dawson, also on the apprentice programme, said: "The apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to develop my theoretical knowledge at college alongside practical, hands-on experience.
"For me, this approach to learning has supported my self-development. I have learned skills such as fault-finding, electrical testing, as well as developing my analytical thinking to solve issues logically and systematically, all of which will be valuable in my future career once I’ve qualified."
Kate Holden, HR Director for EMR, said: “Our apprenticeship programme is not just about developing technical skills – it’s about shaping the next generation of rail engineers who will drive innovation and excellence in the industry.
“Our apprenticeship programme offers a blend of practical, hands-on training at our depots and classroom-based learning, equipping apprentices with the skills, knowledge, and behaviours they need to thrive. With industry-leading support from the National Training Academy for Rail (NTAR), this programme is a fantastic opportunity to build a rewarding career in rail engineering.”
EMR is committed to ensuring a fair, respectful, and supportive recruitment process.
