EMR reminds customers about Sheffield station access changes as ANPR enforcement begins
- EMR is reminding customers at Sheffield station about new Automatic Number Plate Recognition system
- ANPR system will be installed on 20 July and will ensure the station forecourt is used as intended
- Blue Badge holders remain entitled to free parking where applicable but must register their vehicle with APCOA in advance
East Midlands Railway (EMR), which is operated by Transport UK, is reminding customers travelling to and from Sheffield station about the new road layout and parking arrangements ahead of the introduction of Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) enforcement.
ANPR cameras will be installed on 20 July. Following testing and commissioning, the cameras will become operational, helping to ensure the station forecourt is used as intended and traffic continues to flow safely and efficiently.
The road layout outside Sheffield station was changed by Sheffield City Council, working in collaboration with EMR, to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and make it easier for customers to access the station.
Customers arriving by car or taxi should be aware of the following arrangements:
- Access to the station is now via Fornham Street and Cross Turner Street.
- Turner Street is now one-way and no longer provides vehicle access into the station.
- Hackney carriage taxis can pick up customers from the dedicated rank immediately outside the station.
- Private hire vehicles can continue to drop off outside the station but must collect passengers from the designated pick-up area on Cross Turner Street.
- General passenger drop-off is also available on Cross Turner Street, where parking is limited to a very short stay.
The new arrangements are designed to reduce congestion around the station, improve journey reliability and create a safer environment for customers, pedestrians and drivers.
As part of the scheme, ANPR technology will enforce the restrictions and monitor vehicles using the station access roads and parking areas. Customers should follow the on-site signage carefully and ensure they comply with the parking and waiting restrictions.
Blue Badge holders remain entitled to free parking where applicable but must register their vehicle with APCOA in advance to ensure their exemption is recognised - more information about this can be found here: ANPR Car Parking | EMR.
Clear signage has been installed throughout the station approach to help customers understand the new road layout and parking arrangements.
EMR is encouraging anyone travelling to or collecting passengers from Sheffield station to allow a little extra time to familiarise themselves with the changes and follow the new signage when arriving.
Philippa Cresswell, Customer Experience Director at East Midlands Railway, said: “We are reminding customers travelling to and from Sheffield station to follow the new road layout and on-site signage ahead of ANPR enforcement coming into operation.
"The changes to access, drop-off and pick-up arrangements have been introduced to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and make journeys through the station area safer and more reliable."
