EMR’s Digital Pay As You Go trial reaches major milestone with 20,000 journeys completed

  • More than 20,000 journeys have been made through EMR's Pay As You Go trial.
  • Trial runs between Leicester, Derby and Nottingham.
  • Using GPS-based technology, the system tracks journeys via mobile and automatically works out the correct fare.

East Midlands Railway (EMR), which is operated by Transport UK, is encouraging more customers to take part in its pioneering Digital Pay As You Go trial after the scheme passed a major milestone of 20,000 journeys.

The trial, which operates between Leicester, Derby and Nottingham, uses GPS-based technology within the EMR app to automatically track journeys and charge customers the fare for their travel.

The initiative is designed to simplify rail ticketing by removing the need to choose and purchase tickets before travelling.

Since launching, customers have embraced the new technology, completing more than 20,000 journeys across the trial area and helping EMR gather valuable insights into how digital ticketing could shape the future of rail travel.

The trial forms part of a wider industry programme, supported by the Department for Transport, to explore smarter and more flexible ticketing options for customers.

Simon Pready, Commercial Director at East Midlands Railway, said: "Reaching 20,000 journeys is a fantastic milestone and shows that customers are willing to embrace new ways of travelling by rail.

"Digital Pay As You Go is designed to make train travel simpler. Customers can travel without worrying about buying the right ticket in advance, safe in the knowledge they'll automatically be charged the right fare for their journey.

"Every journey made as part of the trial helps us better understand how this technology can improve the customer experience. We would encourage anyone who regularly travels between Leicester, Derby and Nottingham to sign up and take part."
