Digital Pay As You Go: More than 500 people sign up to ticket trial and there is still time to take part
- More than 500 customers have signed up to the Digital Pay As You Go trial with EMR
- Trial runs between Leicester, Derby and Nottingham
- Using GPS-based technology, the system tracks journeys via mobile and automatically charges the best-value fare
East Midlands Railway (EMR) and Transport UK are urging customers to take part in a pioneering digital ticketing trial and join the 500 passengers already taking advantage of the scheme.
The trial, which involves journeys between Leicester, Derby and Nottingham, offers customers the chance to experience a simpler, smarter way to travel.
Using GPS-based technology, the system tracks journeys via mobile phone and automatically charges the best-value fare – removing the need to pre-purchase tickets or worry about choosing the correct one.
Backed by Department for Transport funding, this initiative forms part of a national effort to modernise rail travel and make train journeys easier and more intuitive.
Transport UK’s business, EMR, was the first to launch as part of a wider project across the Midlands and the North, aimed at overhauling outdated ticketing systems.
The trial will run until August, 2026.
Simon Pready, Commercial Director at East Midlands Railway, said: “We have had a great reaction to the launch of the trial, with more than 500 customers currently taking part and benefiting from a new, seamless way to travel.
“Digital Pay As You Go is all about making train travel easier, faster and more intuitive. No more fare confusion – just check in and out with your phone and know you’ll automatically pay the best-value fare for your journey. There is still time to sign up, so please register for one of the remaining places via our website.”
