- More than 200 customers sign up to new Pay As You Go trial with EMR
- Trial will run between Leicester, Derby and Nottingham
- Using GPS-based technology, the system tracks journeys via mobile and automatically charges the best-value fare
More than 200 passengers have signed up in just 10 days to take part in East Midlands Railway’s (EMR) pioneering digital ticketing trial – the first of its kind for the region.
Launching in September, the trial will run between Leicester, Derby and Nottingham, offering up to 1,000 local customers the chance to experience a simpler, smarter way to travel.
Using GPS-based technology, the system tracks journeys via mobile and automatically charges the best-value fare – removing the need to pre-purchase tickets or worry about getting the right one.
Backed by Department for Transport funding, this initiative is part of a national effort to modernise rail travel and make train journeys easier and more intuitive.
The EMR trial is the first to launch as part of a wider project across the Midlands and North, aimed at overhauling outdated ticketing systems.
Jenna Cowie, Interim Commercial Director at East Midlands Railway, said: "It is great that we have had such a positive reaction to this trial. It is all about making train travel easier, faster and more intuitive. No more fare confusion – just check in and out with your phone and know you’ll automatically pay the best-value fare for your journey. There is still time to sign up – so please register for one of the remaining places via our website."
