Nature and wellbeing: EMR funds boost Leicestershire community projects
- EMR's Community Fund has supported three projects in Leicestershire
- Projects celebrate the power of nature and the outdoors to help mental and physical health
East Midlands Railway's (EMR) Community Fund has supported three projects in Leicestershire that celebrate the power of nature and the outdoors to enhance both mental and physical health.
The fund, which supports communities and organisations along the routes served by EMR, has contributed £5,000 to three very deserving projects: the Beaumont Leys Green Futures Initiative, the Foxton Natural Playscape Project, and the newly launched Pierce Perspective Community Wellbeing Garden.
The Beaumont Leys Green Futures Initiative is a Leicester-based project transforming derelict wasteland into an urban garden, creating a thriving community hub focused on biodiversity, climate action, and local food production.
The project has engaged more than 50 volunteers in converting a neglected piece of land into a vibrant garden. It now hosts workshops for the local community, including sessions for school pupils.
Martin Buchanan, Chief Executive Officer of E2, the charity behind the Urban Garden project, said: "The support from EMR's Community Fund has been nothing short of transformative for the Beaumont Leys Green Futures Initiative.
"It has allowed us to establish an urban garden, run inspiring environmental workshops, and empower young people with the leadership skills to champion climate action. This funding has brought our community together, encouraging sustainability and resilience, and creating a lasting positive impact on Beaumont Leys."
Another initiative benefiting children is the Foxton Natural Playscape Project. This innovative scheme by Foxton Primary School integrates local heritage into play by creating a sustainable, inclusive playscape inspired by the Foxton Locks canal system.
George Norman, Headteacher at Foxton Primary School, said: "We're incredibly excited to introduce this water play area to our students. It’s not just about having fun—although there’s plenty of fun to be had—it’s about fostering a deep connection to our local heritage and encouraging teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity.
"This development is part of our broader commitment to promoting active, outdoor play, supporting the well-being and holistic development of every child."
The Pierce Perspective Community Wellbeing Garden in Hinckley is another inspiring project to receive funding. This garden offers a tranquil space where community members can connect with nature to improve their mental and physical well-being. The charity behind the initiative received funding for a new polytunnel to extend the growing season, as well as resources to clear the space, install solar generators, collect water, and set up a compostable toilet.
Andy Pierce, Founder of The Pierce Perspective, said: “The funding provided by the Community Fund has been instrumental in helping us bring The Pierce Perspective’s Wellbeing Garden to life. While the garden is still in development, the support has allowed us to make incredible progress—from clearing the site to starting the creation of sensory and therapeutic spaces.
"This project is bringing people together, fostering a sense of community, and laying the foundation for a space that will support mental health and well-being for years to come. We’re excited about how far we’ve come and look forward to seeing the garden take shape.”
Kaye Robinson, Community Engagement Manager at East Midlands Railway, said: "We were delighted to support these inspiring projects that highlight the transformative power of nature and the outdoors.
"The projects are shining examples of how community-driven efforts can enhance well-being, promote sustainability, and bring people together. They clearly demonstrate the positive impact that collaboration and a connection to nature can achieve."
