Luton Airport Express: More than 575,000 customers use service since the launch of the Luton DART

  • More than 575,000 travel on Luton Airport Express in the last year
  • Fare price, speed and convenience have proven very popular with travellers
  • Growth of 52 per cent more than year before the service linked up with the Luton DART
  • More good news for customers as Class 360 train refurb begins - meaning new interiors and more luggage space

East Midlands Railway's (EMR) Luton Airport Express has enjoyed great success in the last 12 months - growing the number of journeys by more than 50 per cent since its new link with the Luton DART shuttle service.

The Luton Airport Express has carried 575,997 customers from the capital and the south, providing a convenient, fast, and environmentally friendly way to get to London Luton Airport (LLA).

Customers have taken advantage of quick journey times and cheap tickets, with a trip from Central London to the London Luton Airport terminal taking as little as 32 minutes, and costing from just £10, when using the Luton Airport Express and Luton DART.

Services depart every 30 minutes, from early morning to late at night, Monday to Saturday, with regular services on Sundays.

When customers arrive at Luton Airport Parkway, they are able to use a lift or escalators for step-free access between the train platform and the airport's shuttle service—the Luton DART. The Luton DART takes customers straight to the terminal in under four minutes, providing a reliable, quick, and greener connection.

Luton Airport Express customers are also set to benefit with the announcement that the electric Class 360 trains that operate the service will receive a refurbishment.

The £27.6 million investment will see more brand new interiors, greater luggage space, new 2+2 seating, charging points, and new passenger information systems.

EMR's commitment to promote the Luton Airport Express service has been evident since its launch. Indeed, this dedication was acknowledged at this year's Rail Business Awards, where EMR was awarded the Marketing & Communications Excellence Award.

Simon Pready, Commercial Director at East Midlands Railway, said: "It has been a great year for the Luton Airport Express and our efforts to market the service has really paid off.

"We have seen the number of customers grow steadily as people discover the convenience the service offers—in fact, the number of journeys has grown by more than 50 percent since the service linked up with the DART.

"Many customers have taken advantage of our £10 fares and have been impressed with the frequency of the service, with trains running every half-hour.

"The speed of getting from Central London to the Luton Airport Parkway and seamlessly connecting to the airport via the Luton DART really does take the stress out of travelling to the airport, and with the multimillion-pound refurbishment project now underway, customers will be set to benefit from an even better experience."

London Luton Airport is one of the UK’s busiest airports, carrying over 13 million passengers in 2022 and has more than 40 shop and restaurant brands to choose from.

Leisure and business passengers flying from LLA can travel to more than 140 destinations in Europe, North Africa, and Asia. Airlines include easyJet, Wizz Air, Ryanair, Tui, FlyOne, Sun Express, and El Al.

Alberto Martin, CEO of London Luton Airport, said: “The Luton Airport Express has brought London Luton Airport even closer to Central London, with a faster, more frequent and more convenient service that, including the Luton DART, takes around 30 minutes door-to-door.

"This investment from EMR is exciting news and will deliver an enhanced on-board passenger experience, with improved interiors and modernised technology, strengthening the appeal of the Luton Airport Express service as a sustainable travel option for passengers travelling to and from the airport.”
