EMR announces updates to its mobility scooter policy
- EMR has updated its mobility scooter policy to better accommodate a wider range scooters
- Changes are informed following consultations with accessibility specialists, customers and EMR’s safety team
- Customers using mobility scooters must still obtain a permit prior to boarding or apply for a temporary permit
- Foldable scooters can be carried as luggage without a permit
East Midlands Railway (EMR) is pleased to announce important updates to its mobility scooter policy, aimed at enhancing safety, flexibility, and convenience for customers who rely on them when travelling by train.
The changes are designed to better accommodate the wide range of mobility scooters in use today, following consultations with accessibility specialists, customers and EMR’s safety team.
Customers using mobility scooters must still obtain a permit prior to boarding. Applications can be made online, by phone, email, or post through EMR’s Customer Service Centre.
Customers who wish to travel before EMR can process an application can obtain a temporary one at the following stations: Sheffield, Derby, Leicester, Nottingham or Lincoln.
Scooters must meet safety standards, including not exceeding the maximum weight of 300kg (47 stone) - this includes the weight of the passenger.
If the scooters does not have anti-tip wheels - it must be walked onto the train. Scooters should also have sealed batteries. Both three-wheeled and four-wheeled scooters are permitted, provided they meet size specifications. Further mobility scooter criteria can be found below.
Staff at EMR's large stations can assess the safety of mobility scooters for train travel. At unstaffed stations on the EMR network, a painted frame on the platform helps on-train staff check if scooters meet size safety regulations for travel.
The frame includes a size guide for accepted scooter footprints on EMR trains. EMR staff may also carry a handheld measuring device.
Customers with scooters that do not meet EMR's criteria will not be permitted to board. However, now foldable scooters can be carried as luggage without a permit.
Permits are valid for 24 months and must be updated if the scooter model changes.

Customers wishing to apply for a mobility scooter permit can do so by visiting eastmidlandsrailway.co.uk/trains-stations/assisted-travel, emailing at contact@eastmidlandsrailway.co.uk, or by calling the Passenger Assist team on 08000 11 33 23 or 03457 125 678 (option 3).
Mobility scooter criteria for travel
Triangular footprint - i.e. it has one or two wheels at the front which are close together.
- Is no more than 1200mm long and 700mm wide
- Weighs no more than 300kg, including passenger
- Has a maximum speed of 4mph
- Has anti-tip wheels fitted to the rear
- Has a free-wheeling facility for use in case of power failure
- has sealed batteries
Square footprint - i.e. with four wheels spaced evenly apart
- is no more than 1050mm long and 500mm wide
- Weighs no more than 300kg, including passenger
- Has a maximum speed of 4mph
- Has anti-tip wheels fitted to the rear
- Has a free-wheeling facility for use in case of power failure
- has sealed batteries
